1. Open Community Library & Lending Services

Unrestricted public access to an expansive literary collection of over 4,850 catalogued volumes at Mairie de Clion.

The foundation of Amicale du Livre is our community library, housed within the municipal administrative complex at Place Jean Moulin in Clion. The facility is maintained entirely by volunteer librarians who catalog, preserve, and circulate a diverse collection of literary works. The library features modern fiction, classic world literature, historical treatises, biographical memoirs, poetry, graphic novels, and reference encyclopedias.

Unlike commercial lending services or subscription-based models, our library is 100% free of charge. Any resident can register with a simple proof of residency, borrow up to five volumes at a time for a three-week duration, and renew loans with total flexibility. For patrons with visual impairments or age-related vision changes, we maintain a dedicated section of large-print titles and audiobooks on compact disc and digital memory devices.

The library also functions as a serene civic study space. Students preparing for secondary school examinations or university coursework utilize our quiet study desks, which are equipped with basic reference resources and natural lighting. Volunteer attendants are continuously on hand to assist with bibliographic queries, book searches, and reading recommendations.

2. Youth Storytelling & Early Literacy Workshops

Cultivating curiosity, oral language competencies, and artistic sensibility among children from toddlers to adolescents.

Literacy begins long before a child formally learns to decipher printed letters in elementary school. It begins with the cadence of human speech, the visual fascination of illustrated pages, and the emotional resonance of shared stories. Every other Wednesday afternoon, Amicale du Livre hosts "L'Heure du Conte" (Storytelling Hour), welcoming young children and their parents or grandparents.

Conducted by seasoned volunteers—including retired schoolteachers and expressive storytellers—these sessions combine reading aloud with sensory props, hand puppets, and interactive questions that invite children to express their observations and feelings. By exploring themes of friendship, courage, ecology, and empathy, young listeners develop crucial emotional intelligence alongside vocabulary enrichment.

For older pupils aged 7 to 12, our literacy workshops focus on narrative creation, creative writing exercises, and comic book illustration. These sessions empower children to become creators of stories rather than mere passive consumers, reinforcing literacy confidence and building academic resilience for the classroom.

3. Intergenerational Reading Circles & Civic Digital Aid

Uniting seniors and youths to share memories, explore literature, and conquer digital exclusion together.

Social isolation in rural communities poses a severe threat to wellbeing. Our monthly Intergenerational Reading Circles deliberately connect generations that might otherwise remain separated in daily life. Retired elders and high school students gather around shared literary texts—discussing historical changes, rural customs, environmental challenges, and contemporary ethical dilemmas.

In addition to literary discussions, these sessions include dedicated Digital Literacy Desks ("Ateliers Numériques Solidaires"). Many senior citizens in Clion face immense stress when attempting to access essential public services, manage medical appointments, or interact with official portals that have transitioned online. During our workshops, patient volunteer coaches guide seniors step-by-step through using digital tablets, setting up secure accounts, reading e-books, and communicating with distant family members.

This reciprocal relationship empowers both parties: seniors gain independence in the modern technological world, while younger volunteers learn patience, communication skills, and profound respect for the living history represented by our community elders.

4. Mobile Book Courier & Rural Home Outreach

Bringing literature directly to the doorsteps of homebound seniors and geographically isolated residents across Haute-Saintonge.

Recognizing that physical mobility decreases with advanced age or chronic illness, Amicale du Livre refuses to allow mobility limitations to sever a citizen’s connection to books and human society. Our volunteer courier program ("Portage de Livres à Domicile") serves homebound residents living in Clion and surrounding rural hamlets.

Every Thursday, volunteer drivers pack curated selections of novels, local history journals, magazines, and large-print books based on personal preferences gathered during preliminary phone consultations. When delivering books, our volunteers never simply drop off packages; they spend time conversing, checking on the resident’s wellbeing, and providing a reassuring human presence that brightens what might otherwise be a solitary week.
